ButImaynotherepassbyanotherremarkablepassagenottobeforgotten.Asthiscalamityfellamongthepassengersthatweretobeleftheretoplant,andwerehastedashoreandmadetodrinkwaterthattheseamenmighthavethemorebeer,andoneinhissicknessdesiringbutasmallcanofbeer,itwasansweredthatifheweretheirownfatherheshouldhavenone.Thediseasebegantofalla-mongstthemalso,soasalmosthalfoftheircompanydiedbeforetheywentaway,andmanyoftheirofficersandlustiestmen,astheboatswain,gunner,threequar-termasters,thecookandothers.AtwhichtheMasterwassomethingstruckenandsenttothesickashoreandtoldtheGovernorheshouldsendforbeerforthemthathadneedofit,thoughhedrunkwaterhomewardbound.Butnowamongsthiscompanytherewasfaranotherkindofcarriageinthismiserythanamongstthepassengers.Fortheythatbeforehadbeenbooncompan-ionsindrinkingandjollityinthetimeoftheirhealthandwelfare,begannowtodesertoneanotherinthiscalamity,sayingtheywouldnothazardtheirlivesforthem,theyshouldbeinfectedbycomingtohelpthemintheircabins;andso,af-tertheycametoliebyit,woulddolittleornothingforthembut,「iftheydied,letthemdie.」Butsuchofthepassengersaswereyetaboardshowedthemwhatmercytheycouldwhichmadesomeoftheirheartsrelent,astheboatswain(andsomeothers)whowasaproudyoungmanandwouldoftencurseandscoffatthepassengers.Butwhenhegrewweak,theyhadcompassiononhimandhelpedhim;thenheconfessedhedidnotde-serveitattheirhands,hehadabusedtheminwordanddeed.「Oh!」(saithhe)「you,Inowsee,showyourlovelikeChristiansindeedonetoan-other,butweletoneanotherlieanddielikedogs.」Anotherlaycursinghiswife,sayingifithadnotbeenforherhehadnevercomethisun-luckyvoyage,andanoncursinghisfellows,sayinghehaddonethisandthatforsomeofthem;hehadspentsomuchandsomuchamongstthem,andtheywerenowwearyofhimanddidnothelphim,havingneed.Anothergavehiscompan-ionallhehad,ifhedied,tohelphiminhisweakness;hewentandgotalittlespiceandmadehimamessofmeatonceortwice.Andbecausehediednotsosoonasheexpected,hewentamongsthisfellowsandsworetheroguewouldcoz-enhim,hewouldseehimchokedbeforehemadehimanymoremeat;andyetthepoorfellowdiedbeforemorning.IndianRelationsAllthiswhiletheIndianscameskulkingaboutthem,andwouldsometimesshowthemselvesaloofoff,butwhenanyapproachednearthem,theywouldrunaway;andoncetheystoleawaytheirtoolswheretheyhadbeenatworkandweregonetodinner.ButaboutthesixteenthofMarch,acertainIndiancameboldlya-mongstthemandspoketotheminbrokenEnglish,whichtheycouldwellunder-standbutmarveledatit.Atlengththeyunderstoodbydiscoursewithhim,thathewasnotoftheseparts,butbelongedtotheeasternpartswheresomeEnglishshipscametofish,withwhomhewasacquaintedandcouldnamesundryofthembytheirnames,amongstwhomhehadgothislanguage.Hebecameprofitabletotheminacquaintingthemwithmanythingsconcerningthestateofthecountryintheeastpartswherehelived,whichwasafterwardsprofitableuntothem;asalsoofthepeoplehere,oftheirnames,numberandstrength,oftheirsituationanddistancefromthisplace,andwhowaschiefamongstthem.HisnamewasSamoset.HetoldthemalsoofanotherIndianwhosenamewasSquanto,anativeofthisplace,whohadbeeninEnglandandcouldspeakbetterEnglishthanhim-self.Being,aftersometimeofentertainmentandgiftsdismissed,awhileafterhecameagain,andfivemorewithhim,andtheybroughtagainallthetoolsthatwerestolenawaybefore,andmadewayforthecomingoftheirgreatSachem,calledMassasoit.Who,aboutfourorfivedaysafter,camewiththechiefofhisfriendsandotherattendance,withtheaforesaidSquanto.Withwhom,afterfriendlyentertainmentandsomegiftsgivenhim,theymadeapeacewithhim(whichhathnowcontinuedthistwenty-fouryears)intheseterms:1.Thatneitherhenoranyofhisshouldinjureordohurttoanyoftheirpeo-ple.2.Thatifanyofhisdidhurttoanyoftheirs,heshouldsendtheoffender,thattheymightpunishhim.3.Thatifanythingweretakenawayfromanyoftheirs,heshouldcauseittoberestored;andtheyshoulddotheliketohis.4.Ifanydidunjustlywaragainsthim,theywouldaidhim;ifanydidwara-gainstthem,heshouldaidthem.5.Heshouldsendtohisneighborsconfederatestocertifythemofthis,thattheymightnotwrongthem,butmightbelikewisecomprisedintheconditionsofpeace.6.Thatwhentheirmencametothem,theyshouldleavetheirbowsandar-rowsbehindthem.  [返]
