ThekeyfindingsrelevanttoResearchQuestionsThreeandFourare:
(a)Ingeneral,onlyweakcorrelationsbetweenreportedmetacognitivelisteningawarenessandlisteningcomprehensionandincidentalvocabularyacquisitionwerefound.Onepossibleexplanationforthisisthatthelearners'reporteduseofmetacognitivestrategiesdidnotactuallycorrespondcloselytotheiractualuseofthemwhileperformingthelisteningtasks.Inorderforlearnerstoactontheirpreferredmetacognitivestrategies,theymayneedtimetoimplementthem.Itisalsopossiblethatanyrelationshipbetweenreportedpreferredstrategyuseandlisteningcomprehensionwillonlybecomeevidentovertimeandmaynotbeevidentinparticularshortlisteningtasks.
(b)Oneoftheclearestfindingswasthenegativerelationshipbetweenreporteduseofmentaltranslationandlisteningcomprehensionandincidentalvocabularyacquisition.Thoughmentaltranslationwasafavouredstrategybythelessproficientlearnersinthesample,itassistedneitherlisteningcomprehensionnorincidentalvocabularyacquisitioninthekindsofonlineinput-processingtasksrequiredbytheinstructionaltasksusedinthisstudy.
(c)TherelationshipbetweenreporteduseofmetacognitivestrategiesandlisteningcomprehensionandincidentalvocabularyacquisitionwasmostclearlyevidentinGroupB,thethree-timelisteninggroup,whichreceivednotraining.Onepossibleexplanationforthisisthatthelearnersinthisgroupwerefreetousetheirpreferredstrategies.Incontrast,thelearnersinGroupsCandDmayhavefelttheneedtousestrategiesrelevanttothetrainingtheyhadreceived.
