thebwordswerenotconstructedonanyetymologicalplan。thewordsofwhichtheyweremadeupcouldbeanypartsofspeech,andcouldbeplacedinanyorderandmutilatedinanywaywhichmadethemeasytopronouncewhileindicatingtheirderivation。inthewordcrimethink(thoughtcrime),forinstance,thethinkcamesecond,whereasinthinkpol(thoughtpolice)itcamefirst,andinthelatterwordpolicehadlostitssecondsyllable。becauseofthegreatdifficuityinsecuringeuphony,irregularformationswerecommonerinthebvocabularythanintheavocabulary。forexample,theadjectiveformsofminitrue,minipax,andminiluvwere,respectively,minitruthful,minipeaceful,andminilovely,simplybecause-trueful,-paxful,and-lovefulwereslightlyawkwardtopronounce。inprinciple,however,allbwordscouldinflect,andallinflectedinexactlythesameway。
someofthebwordshadhighlysubtilizedmeanings,barelyintelligibletoanyonewhohadnotmasteredthelanguageasawhole。consider,forexample,suchatypicalsentencefromatimesleadingarticleasoldthinkersunbellyfeelingsoc。theshortestrenderingthatonecouldmakeofthisinoldspeakwouldbe:「thosewhoseideaswereformedbeforetherevolutioncannothaveafullemotionalunderstandingoftheprinciplesofenglishsocialism。」butthisisnotanadequatetranslation。tobeginwith,inordertocompoundwordssuchasspeakwrite,wereofcoursetobefoundintheavocabulary,buttheseweremerelyconvenientabbreviationsandhadnospecialideologicalcolour。
