WhenshehadsweptoutofthedepartmentMr.Sampson,alittleworried,discussedthematterwithMrs.Hodges.

「Alice,whereartthou?」remarkedthebuyer,irritably,andthoughthehadscoredapointagainsther.

Hisideasofmusic-hallcostumeshadnevergonebeyondshortskirts,aswirloflace,andglitteringsequins;butMissAntoniahadexpressedherselfonthatsubjectinnouncertainterms.

「Oh,myaunt!」shesaid.

Andtheinvocationwasutteredinsuchatoneastoindicatearootedantipathytoanythingso

WhenMissAntoniawasannounced,thebuyerplacedthedesignonthetableinsuchapositionthatitmustcatchhereyethemomentshewasshownintohisoffice.Shepouncedonitatonce.

Theassistant,withhisheartinhismouth,wouldsuggestthathethoughtheoughttohaveanothertwoshillingsaweek.
